I’d pick Aaron Finch every day of the week, asserts Darren Lehmann

Former Australia coach Darren Lehmann came to the defence of under-fire batsman Aaron Finch by suggesting that he’d pick the Victorian any day of the week in his team. Finch, who is leading Australia in the series against India, has not registered a 50+ score in 21 innings for the national team.

The Australian cricket team are under immense pressure to perform well after having lost their opening two games against India in the ongoing five-match ODI series away from home. Under the guidance of Justin Langer and leadership of Finch, the Aussies have found it hard to match the home team who have dominated the proceedings so far.

Finch, in particular, has come in for some aggressive criticism from media back in Australia for his below-par performances over the last few tours. The Australian opener has failed to cross the 50-run mark in his last 21 innings for the national team.

However, Lehmann brushed off claims of dropping Finch from the team for the World Cup as he added that if it were up to him he would pick the left-handed batsman in his team every day of the week.

"The World Cup's not now, is it? I'd give him plenty of time prove he's right and once he's in form I'm having him at the top of the order.I'm picking Aaron Finch every day of the week ... people forget what happened in the last World Cup. They [Finch and David Warner] dominated," Lehmann said while he was being presented as the new coach of Big Bash League team - Brisbane Heat.

Lehmann will return to the coaching role for the first time since stepping down following last year's Cape Town ball-tampering scandal after signing a two-year deal with the Big Bash League franchise. Lehmann added that he had remained in contact with banned trio Cameron Bancroft, Steve Smith and Warner and that he was "looking forward to them playing for Australia again".
