IPL 2019 | It is up to the individuals to look into the mirror and ask if they are doing enough, says Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli has revealed that he asked his teammates to look into the mirror and ask if they have done enough this season after RCB’s sixth defeat this season. RCB bounced back emphatically in the second leg of the tournament and ended their campaign on a winning note after beating SRH on Saturday.
RCB had a horrendous start to the season, losing six games on a trot. The team bounced back in the second leg, but that wasn’t enough to qualify for the playoffs, but they did bid farewell on a high by beating SRH in a nail-biter on Saturday. Kohli motivated the players and asked them to reflect on their performance and step up while asserting that the side was doing everything in their reach and were totally dedicated.
“I remember after the sixth game everyone got together and we looked at each other and nodded our heads and that was it. We are doing everything possible and there is nothing going right. Even in the games when we were up for it 80 percent of the game and we would just lose it in those two overs. We just had one message to give to the team that we are committed 120 percent every ball, every minute. It is up to the individuals to look into the mirror and ask if they are doing enough,” Kohli said, reported Star Sports.
Finding the right balance is pivotal in a tournament like IPL. Few teams manage to get it right from the outset while some struggle like RCB did. Kohli spoke about the importance of finding the right balance and how RCB failed on that front.
“We always try to do our best. Sometimes, the balance of the team just is not right in a tournament like IPL for the team to fire. Someone who gets the balance right from game one – they go on and dominate all the games – teams like CSK, Mumbai Indians or Delhi . They have a good balance, which, unfortunately, we could not achieve initially."
A good start is almost half done and Kohli is well aware of that. In 2016, RCB had a great run but lost the final, they had a good start to the season and carried the momentum throughout.
“I think it is always important to start well in IPL. We have seen that in the past. I think 2016 was a freakish season where we just played well and, in the end, did not win. But if you don’t start well your chances of qualifying becomes lesser and lesser.
