IND vs BAN | Time to promote pacers and be less dependent on spinners, says Mominul Haque
Bangladesh skipper Mominul Haque believes that Bangladesh have traditionally been over-dependent on spinners and it is time to promote pace bowling back home. The visitors were thrashed by India in the two-match Test series with both Tests ending inside three days thanks to the Indian pace attack.
Haque was left extremely disappointed by his team's performance in the Test series against India especially for the lack of fight that they showed. The absence of experienced players like Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan definitely came back to haunt them as they could not show any temperament and where tormented throughout the series by Indian fast bowlers. Both the Test matches finished inside three days which also tells a lot about the lack of fighting spirit within the Bangladesh team.
Haque believes that this is something that needs to change quickly and for that to happen, changes need to be made at the grassroots level. He feels that the team has had a great learning experience and will look to improve on it going ahead.
"I think we could not play as a team. There are lots of areas to improve in. If we can do that then we can do well in the upcoming Test matches. I think we failed to make partnerships and paid the price for it. I think we have a lot of things to learn from this series. How to handle this kind of bowling unit and what kind of preparation we need for it," Mominul told Cricbuzz.
"If we can learn our lessons than hopefully, we can do well in the future. You all know we don't play too many Test matches. We have nearly 10 Test matches next year and if we can play a lot of Test matches then we can probably overcome these lackluster performances."
Pitches in Bangladesh traditionally offer a lot of help to spin bowlers and thus the faster bowlers do not get much help in domestic tournaments. This leaves them without the experience of bowling on wickets where there is assistance for seamers and that is exactly what Mominul feels needs to change.
"We should come out of spin dependency. I think the pacers did well in the series. When they will be playing regularly at home and away at that point we can say how much they have improved. If they are given opportunities at home and abroad than I am sure they will improve," he reckoned.
Haque accepted the defeats with a positive frame of mind and asserted that the team will learn from their mistakes and bounce back strongly.
"Struggle makes people perfect. Such situations will come. From these struggles, rather than being disappointed, the more important thing is what you are learning from them," he concluded.
