WPCA launch application against CSA's suspension notice
The Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) has launched an urgent application against Cricket South Africa which suspended the WPCA board last month. The WPCA’s basic argument is that the CSA do not have the right of entitlement to exercise “step-in” rights over the self-standing association.
The WPCA is seeking to overturn CSA’s decision of taking the body under administration, citing administrative and financial concerns. It is learnt that the national board expressed doubts over whether the New Year's Test could take place at Newlands next year.
Besides the arguments that the CSA has no right to implement such a decision, they also claim that CSA did not give the WPCA a hearing before making their decision to suspend the board. In short, the WPCA hopes to have its board reinstated and for CSA's administrator — former WPCA CEO Andre Odendaal — to be stood down.
WPCA believe that the national board came to the decision using incorrect information regarding the funds granted for the reconstruction project going on at the ground. The CSA was understood to be concerned with how that money — R81 million (USD 5.3 million) loan — has been managed. However, a source has told ESPNCricinfo that the hosting rights for the New Year’s Test will not be affected by the legalities.
