Want to follow example set by Dada and Manoj Tiwary, claims Abhimanyu Easwaran
Abhimanyu Easwaran has stated that being named the captain of his state team is a huge responsibility on his shoulders and he will try to do justice to the faith placed in him by following the ideals of Bengal legend Sourav Ganguly. He also talked about his young age and his ambitions for the team.
A budding Abhimanyu Easwaran is all set to take over the reigns of Bengal after having been named by the CAB to be the replacement for outgoing skipper Manoj Tiwary. Originally belonging to Dehradun, he has been a consistent performer for the domestic team and has gained a lot of experience by representing India’s ‘A’ team across several countries.
“It is going to be a good big challenge and opportunity for me. I am thankful to my seniors who made me what I am today. Leading a big team like Bengal, it's a huge honour and pride for me. It's a big responsibility for me and promise I won't disappoint anyone," Abhimanyu Easwaran was reported saying by TOI.
Having succeeded Bengal’s heart-beat Sourav Ganguly himself as the captain of Bengal, Manoj Tiwary has been pretty consistent with the bat, having ended last season as Bengal’s highest run-getter. However, he has failed to produce good enough results as skipper, with Bengal failing to qualify for the Ranji Trophy or Vijay Hazare Trophy’s knockout stage last year was the final nail in the coffin.
"He (Manoj Tiwary) congratulated me after the news. He has played a big role in my career. I have learnt a lot from him. He has guided me at every step. I will be looking for his help and guidance while leading Bengal. He also told me, ‘Abhimanyu, you will play for India someday.’ He believes in my game. He always encourages me, motivates me and gives me cricketing tips,” revealed Easwaran.
Having been given the role at just 23 years of age, a confident Easwaran believes it his skill and personality that should count instead of factoring in his age.
"I don't think it is about age, it is about the performance. Apart from performance, how you carry yourself and the number of runs you have scored. It is a good time to lead a side I am sure I will give my best and take my team to the title win. I am sure we will win a title soon," he added.
The last time Bengal achieved something significant was nearly a decade ago when Ganguly had led them to the Vijay Hazare Trophy, having ended as the runner-ups three consecutive times before that. Easwaran will have a huge challenge in hand and his first Test will begin when they take on Gujarat on September 24 in the tournament opener. As for the Ranji Trophy, Bengal has been placed in Elite Group A along with some strong contenders including reigning champions Vidarbha.
“In any tournament, the Bengal team has always gone (in) with a winning approach. They have played attacking. The hunger for a win is always there. Dada (Ganguly) has set the example. It was followed really well by Manoj bhala (Manoj Tiwary). He is an amazing and experienced player. He has amazing knowledge and skills. The new players are learning a lot from him. We have a good side and have the potential to win tournaments. I will go with the same approach as Dada when I will lead the team,” Easwaran signed off on the matter.
