Not often do we see a teammate turn into a rival in a sport like cricket. But such was the case in the third ODI between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh when Soumya Sarkar and Jaker Ali ended up colliding against one another over a catching opportunity with the latter leaving the field injured on Monday.

With the three-match series leveled 1-1 heading into the decider on Monday, the Sri Lankan unit won the toss and opted to bat. Despite early stutters in the early half of the innings, Janith Liyanage’s excellent ton steered the visitors to a fighting total despite a pause in play due to a menacing collision between two Bangladeshi players.

On the penultimate delivery of the innings, Taskin Ahmed bowled a back-of-a-length delivery outside the off stump that Pramod Madushan tried to slash over the cover region. He ended up getting a top-edge and the ball looped over towards the point region. Jaker Ali from backward point and Soumya Sarkar from cover-point rushed towards the ball to take the catch, and eventually, collided with each other despite the latter grasping the ball firmly.

This resulted in a serious injury for Jaker who was seen lying on the field after Soumya’s shoulder thudded with his head. Fearing the chance of a possible concussion, the umpires summoned a stretcher, and the 26-year-old was carried off the field in quick time. Riding on the back of injuries throughout the contest, Jaker Ali’s knockout added to the hosts’ woes, thereby leaving the Twitterverse in a frenzy.
