Proteas pacer Nandre Burger has been sidelined for the rest of the Ireland ODI series due to a lumbar stress reaction. The left-arm fast bowler will also miss South Africa's key clash against Bangladesh later this month for two Tests and is scheduled for scans, with further updates pending.

‌Cricket South Africa (CSA) took to their official website and announced Burger’s unfortunate injury. The statement read, “  Proteas Men’s fast bowler Nandre Burger has been ruled out of the remainder of the One-Day International (ODI) series against Ireland and the upcoming Test tour of Bangladesh due to a lumbar stress reaction. The 29-year-old experienced discomfort in his lower back, and subsequent scans revealed the injury. He will return home and undergo further assessments.”

While there is no official word on a replacement for the third ODI, which South Africa leads 2-0 after dominant wins by 139 and 174 runs, CSA will announce a replacement for the Test series in Dhaka and Chattogram later. The current squad features Kagiso Rabada, Dane Paterson, and Wiaan Mulder as fast-bowling options.

Nandre Burger last appeared for South Africa in the second ODI against Afghanistan on September 20, where he struggled, conceding 68 runs in 10 overs for one wicket. Despite this, Burger has had a promising start to his international career, debuting in all three formats during South Africa's home series against India last December and January. In three Tests, he has claimed 14 wickets, whilst also playing five ODIs and a couple of T20Is to date. Earlier this year, he also made his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals, picking up 7 wickets in 6 matches.

Additionally, Tony de Zorzi missed the second ODI due to a soft tissue injury in his right knee. The injury occurred while he was fielding during the first ODI when he awkwardly attempted to stop a ball from the sandy outfield. An MRI confirmed the extent of the injury.

South Africa is all set to face Bangladesh in the first Test on October 21st at Dhaka.
