Younis Khan appointed Afghanistan’s mentor for upcoming Champions Trophy
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) have appointed former Pakistan cricketer Younis Khan as their mentor for the forthcoming Champions Trophy to be staged in Pakistan and the UAE. This is the third time that the Afghan board stuck with a mentor from the host nation of an ICC event.
The ACB will continue its approach of appointing a former cricketer from an ICC event’s host nation on a short-term contract. Firstly, Ajay Jadeja mentored the Afghan Atalans during the 2023 World Cup in India where the side won games against England, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. They were also close to enforcing an upset against Australia if not for a Glenn Maxwell heroics. The side finished sixth in the World Cup and qualified for the upcoming Champions Trophy.
Recently, Dwayne Bravo was the mentor of Afghanistan for the T20 World Cup in USA and the West Indies where the Jonathan Trott-coached side ended up as a worthy semi-finalist, their first semi-final appearance in ten years.
This is the second time Younis will be with the Afghanistan setup, having stewarded the side in a 15-day camp in 2022
"Since the Champions Trophy is being held in Pakistan, it was required to assign a talented and experienced player as mentor from the hosting country. We already had efficient experience with hosting countries' mentors in ODI World Cup 2023 and T20I World Cup 2024. Observing the conditions, therefore, we have appointed Younis Khan as mentor for our national team for the upcoming mega event and wish him best of the luck in his crucial assignment…. Observing the conditions, therefore, we have appointed Younis Khan as mentor for our national team for the upcoming mega event and wish him best of the luck in his crucial assignment.",” ACB chief executive Naseeb Khan cited.
Afghanistan are placed in Group B, stacked in a group of death with South Africa, Australia, and England. All the games except the ones consisting of India, will be played in Pakistan.
