The league stages of the Women's Premier League have come to an end. And this has not been the season which the defending champions, Mumbai Indians would have expected. For the first time in the history of the tournament, the team failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Twenty matches of the league stages of the TATA WPL 2026 have come to an end. Who could have expected that the tournament would turn out to be an unexpected one? With nail biting clashes to only one team reaching the playoffs when the last few league stage games were remaining.

And with the match between UP Warriorz and Delhi Capitals, the final playoff spot has also been sealed. Delhi Capitals has made it to the fourth consecutive playoffs of the tournament, and will be hunting their first title. But for the defending champions, their journey in the WPL has ended in the league stages only.

1. Mumbai Indians Make Unexpected History

With the current season coming to an end for Mumbai Indians and UP Warriorz, the defending champions have made an unexpected history. Ever since the tournament started, Mumbai was able to make it to the playoffs. They have already won the title two times, winning the inaugural season and even the previous edition.

The team also reached the playoffs in 2024, but lost to RCB in the Eliminator match. Among all the three seasons, it was clear that Mumbai is a dominant force until now. For the very first time in the history of the tournament, Mumbai Indians have not made it to the playoffs.

They have finished just at the 4th spot in the standings with 3 wins in 8 matches. Mumbai Indians had a clear advantage in its net run rate, but they fell one win short to make it to the playoffs. While the season has ended for Mumbai Indians, fans are still eager to see which team of Gujarat, Bengaluru, and Delhi wins the final.

2. DC’s Win, MI’s Loss

Mumbai Indians played its last league stage match against Gujarat Giants. Both teams were having three wins each, and the team which won this game would immediately make it to the playoffs. Gujarat Giants were batting first in this game and they were able to post a total of 167 runs for the loss of 4 wickets.

But in the chase, Harmanpreet Kaur gave her best for Mumbai Indians. Her knock of 82 runs was still not enough to help the team win this game and reach the playoffs. Mumbai lost the game by 11 runs and their qualification was dependent on the final league stage match. This match didn't involve them, as it was UP Warriorz against Delhi Capitals.

Mumbai Indians had a clear edge over Delhi Capitals in terms of net run rate. But Delhi had to win the match against UP Warriorz to make sure that they are able to reach the playoffs. If Delhi was not able to win the game, it was Mumbai Indians sealing their way to yet another playoff.

Either way, history had to be created for Delhi Capitals or Mumbai Indians. Both teams had made it to the playoffs in all three seasons but only one of them could have made it this time. The match between UP and Delhi started with Delhi's bowlers getting the upper hand early in the game.

The pitch was favouring the bowlers, as Delhi was able to put UP at the score of 76/7. UP’s lower order showcased some strength, which helped the team to put up 122 runs for the loss of 8 wickets on the board. The target was short, but Delhi lost the wicket of Lizelle Lee quickly.

UP Warriorz were not able to capitalise on the same, as the team even dropped two catches of Laura Wolvaardt. Eventually, Wolvaardt and Shafali Verma stood together to take Delhi close to the win. Eventually, Jemimah Rodrigues scored 30 runs off 18 balls which helped Delhi to seal the win and a spot in the playoffs.

3. Mumbai Indians Worst Season in WPL?

Despite being the defending champions, Mumbai Indians have recorded their worst edition in the WPL till now. The team was not able to start the season with a win, and neither are they going to end it in the playoffs. First time missing out on the playoffs was not the only negative record made by Mumbai Indians this time.

When Mumbai was playing its sixth league stage match against Delhi Capitals, they suffered another loss. What made this loss shocking was the fact that it was their 4th loss in the league stages of the tournament. Before this, the team never took more than 3 losses in any edition of the WPL.
