The T20 World Cup has come to an end for some teams, and it even had shocking exits. One of them was Australia's exit from the group stages of the tournament. Former Australian captain, Ricky Ponting, has pointed out a player who might have played his last edition.
Every T20 World Cup has brought down some shocking exits in the Group stages. Last season it was Pakistan, and this time it was Australia. The Australian team already had various players missing out on the tournament due to injury issues, but the other players also struggled to do well. This resulted in a group stage exit for the team.
Amidst all this, Ricky Ponting, the former Australian captain, has given a bold prediction for one player. He talked about Glenn Maxwell, who might be having his last T20 World Cup in this edition. Maxwell has also struggled to do well in the format, which might even result in an end to his career within the next few months.
Ponting Points out Australian Team
Ricky Ponting has been an active part in the ICC commentary panel for the T20 World Cup 2026. He was surely disappointed with Australia's loss against Zimbabwe and later to Sri Lanka, which resulted in them being almost knocked out of the tournament. With Zimbabwe's clash against Ireland being washed out, it came as an end for Australia in the T20 World Cup.
Ricky Ponting recently talked about the players who could be available for the next cycle. He said, “Glenn Maxwell, I don't think will be there. I think it looks to me like his career is coming towards an end.” He clearly pointed out Glenn Maxwell’s form, which has deteriorated over the last few months.
But he also remained positive on a few players who could be seen playing yet another cycle for the team. Ponting said, “I think Mitchell Marsh will probably hang on long enough for (the 2028 T20 World Cup) and I think Travis Head will definitely be around and (Josh) Inglis will be around.”
Maxwell's Dip in Form
Glenn Maxwell has experienced a dip in his form over the last few years. He has not been able to do well in the shortest format of the game, whether he plays in any T20 league or for the Australian team. This has been the major concern, which even led to him being released by his teams in the IPL for two consecutive seasons.
Glenn Maxwell in T20Is Since 2024:
- Innings: 26
- Not Out: 3
- Runs: 622
- Average: 27.04
- Strike Rate: 159.48
- 100s: 1
- 50s: 2
Taking a look at his form since 2024, Maxwell has not been able to really showcase his fireworks with the bat for the Australian team. Out of the 26 innings, he has managed to score 50+ runs in just three occasions. And since 2025, his form had dipped even more, with Maxwell registering one half-century in 12 innings.
Glenn Maxwell in IPL Since 2024:
- Innings: 15
- Not Out: 0
- Runs: 100
- Average: 6.66
- Strike Rate: 108.69
- 100s: 0
- 50s: 0
The same has also been the story for him in the Indian Premier League. Over the last two seasons of the tournament, he played for two different teams. These were Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings. In the end, Maxwell was unable to shine and this resulted in him being dropped and eventually released by the team.
After being released by Punjab Kings, Glenn Maxwell also decided that he won't be registering for the IPL auction. He has now decided to participate in the Pakistan Super League 11th season and has been bought by Hyderabad Kingsmen for the tournament.
Australia's Final Group Stage Clash
Australia will be playing its last Group Stage Clash against Oman in the T20 World Cup. This will be an intense game, as Oman will be planning to add another upset in this tournament. Australia has already given several upset losses to the fans, which shows the team's struggles in the shortest format lately. Even after starting the tournament with a win, they suffered consecutive losses against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.
Oman’s captain, Jatinder Singh said, “One hundred percent this is an opportunity. And our boys are looking forward to it. Because T20 is a game of momentum and the moments, and if you play those moments right, you can do anything on that particular day. Australia is not doing well at the moment… it is the best time to crush them. The boys are really positive. They are looking forward to the match against Australia to make their mark.”
