The last time Varun Chakravarthy played a T20 World Cup, his Indian career was understood to be over for good. Five years later, the veteran has returned to the event top of the rankings, and documented yet more proof of his rise in Ahmedabad on Sunday with a huge wicket amidst a scratchy spell.

South Africa put together a remarkable recovery in Ahmedabad on Sunday to post a daunting total of 187/7 despite reeling at 20/3Β early on in the game. Dewald Brevis and David Miller put the innings back on track with a 97-run stand before Tristan Stubbs provided the final flourish with a rapid knock of 44, 20 of which came in the final over. However, the situation could have been much worse for India, were it not for the ever-reliable wicket taking abilities of Varun Chakaravarthy.

The mystery spinner came under flak early on when both Brevis and Miller chose him as the target to dismantle, resulting in 47 runs conceded in his quota of four overs. However, skipper Suryakumar Yadav persisted with him knowing his knack of picking crucial wickets, and the move finally paid dividends in the 16th over. Varun found himself up agianst Miller, the veteran going strong even after Brevis had fallen few overs earlier to race to 63 off just 36 deliveries. On the fourth delivery of what his final over, Varun trundled in from over the stump and caught Miller off guard by firing a ball through on length wide off the stumps. Miller instinctively saw width and tried to go big but got no proper timing on it as the Kookaburra floated in the Ahmedabad breeze before depositing itself safely into Tilak Varma's hands at long-off to end a remarkable knock.

With the wicket, Varun became the first Indian bowler to go 18 consecutiveΒ inningsΒ with at least one wicket to show for it, further cementing himself as a legend of the shorter format.
