Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals by 50 runs in the WPL in Navi Mumbai on Saturday. Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt scored belligerent half-centuries to power the Women in Blue to a dominant 195/4 before Nicola Carey and the England skipper restricted the visitors for their win this season.

‌Mumbai Indians made a terrific comeback after their sloppy display in the inaugural match of the Women’s Premier League with a thumping 50-run over Delhi Capitals in Navi Mumbai on Saturday. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat-Sciver Brunt scored blistering half-centuries to take the Women in Blue to a marauding 195/4 before Nicola Carey led an incisive bowling display to restrict the visitors and score their first points in the tournament.

After being put into bat at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, the Mumbai Indians had another torrid start with Amelia Kerr departing for a golden duck after edging an outswinger, to a diving Lizelle Lee, from Chinelle Henry in the second over. However, new batter Nat Sciver-Brunt came out all guns blazing with two boundaries in the same over before again targeting the West Indies all-rounder with two more fours in her next. With skipper Jemimah Rodrigues introducing spin in the last over of the powerplay, the England skipper responded with two boundaries as the home side were placed at 43/1 at the end of six overs. Meanwhile, Kamalini, who looked scratchy from the other end, showed signs of recovery with a couple of boundaries of newbie Nandani Sharma before perishing to the pacer in the very next ball. But that united the experienced duo of Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet in the middle. The all-rounder was the aggressor initially in the partnership finding boundaries with ease, bringing up her half-century in 32 balls while Harmanpreet started cautiously from the other end. But the Indian skipper caught up with a six and four off Chinelle Henry in the 13th over to take the side past the 100-run mark. Though the England skipper looked set for a big one with three more boundaries off Minnu Mani, she was dismissed by Shree Charani, against the run of play, in the next over, after hitting 13 boundaries during her knock of 70 off 46 balls. But Harmanpreet was still there as she raised the tempo to take the side beyond 150 in the 17th over. In the next over, she got to her fifty in style with a huge six off Minnu before churning out four boundaries in the final over from Shree Charani to get closer to the 200-run mark. The Women in Blue’s skipper remained unbeaten on 74 off just 42 balls, with eight fours and three sixes, while rookie pacer Nandani ended with figures fo 2/26 in three overs.

The Capitals had a nightmarish start to their run chase with openers Lizelle Lee, Shafali Verma and Laura Wolvaardt all departing cheaply within the fifth over with the score reading  just 33. However, the free fall did not stop there, with captain Jemimah and the experienced Marizanne Kapp also following suit in the next two overs to put the visitors in deep trouble. Though the target looked far beyond reach, young Nikki Prasad and Chinelle Henry saved the side from embarrassment with a 40-run stand for the sixth wicket before the former departed. However, Henry continued her stay to take the side past the three-figure mark before being dismissed by Kerr. The West Indies all-rounder waged a lone battle, hitting three sixes and five fours during her 33-ball 56. However, the visitors were bowled out for 145 with an over to spare, with Carey and Kerr picking up 3/37 and 3/24, respectively, in their four over spells and Sciver-Brunt also chipping in with two.
