Chris Woakes turned unlikely hero for Sylhet Titans in their BPL 2025-26 Eliminator against Rangpur Riders in Mirpur on Tuesday. Needing six runs in the last ball, the England all-rounder smashed a maximum to power his side into the qualifier, giving way to emotional scenes at the venue.

‌Sylhet Titans beat Rangpur Riders by three wickets in a thrilling and low-scoring eliminator of the Bangladesh Premier League in Mirpur on Tuesday. The pace duo of Khaled Ahmed and Chris Woakes picked up 4/14 and 2/15 in their respective four-over spells to restrict the Riders to a paltry 111/9 after putting them in at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.

Apart from his miserly two-wicket haul with the ball, Woakes became Sylhet’s saviour with the willow, taking them to the qualifier of the tournament. With the Titans also enduring a batting collapse in the chase, placed at 105/7, and Woakes on strike for the all-important delivery, they needed six runs to avoid elimination from the tournament.

And he did not disappoint, scoring a stunning six off Faheem Ashraf over the cover boundary to take the side home in the most dramatic of finishes. With the medium pacer erring on his yorker and bowling a fuller delivery outside off stump, the England all-rounder sat on one knee to hit the Kookaburra with all his might to make way for wild celebrations.

As the ball crossed the boundary rope, he raised his hand, gesturing that he was the man for the side, even as the players came sprinting towards him in joy. Skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz was chuffed as he jumped onto Woakes, giving him a warm hug as the Riders’ players could not believe their luck.

The Riders' coach Mickey Arthur also put on a helpless smile on his face before coming on to congratulate the all-important man for his unbelievable achievement.

What was that!
