The upcoming season of the Indian Premier League will see some changes for the defending champions. Royal Challengers Bengaluru have entered their final stage of bidding, and the team will be getting new owners soon. It is expected that the bidding process will be completed by the end of the month.
This also means Royal Challengers Bengaluru might see a change in its name and logo. With the season commencing on 28th, the defending champions will be playing the opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Several big names participated in the bidding race for the Royal Challengers, but only a few of them now stand in the final race.
Some of the names which have opted out of the same include Adar Poonawala (Serum Institute) and the Glazer family (Manchester United co-owners). As of now, the Swedish private equity firm EQT, along with the Premji Invest in combination, are in the final race. Still, they are facing tough competition from Dr Ranjan Pal, KKR (Singapore Equity Firm), and Singapore's Temasek.
Our Take
After a long time, a renowned IPL team will have new owners. The sale of RCB also opens doors for the other owners, who are willing to sell off a part of their team. Diageo Limited, which owns the RCB team, said that the team is a non-core asset to their alcohol brand.
With the RCB getting new owners, Diageo Limited will invest all the money to expand its liquor operations. Ever since the start of the tournament, the company's sub-brand, United Spirits, has been the main owner of the RCB. Along with that, they wanted to sell off the team just after they had won the IPL. But their plans were affected due to the Bengaluru Stampede.
