New Zealand Cricket Reschedules NZ20 to December 2027
The New Zealand Cricket Association has been working to launch their own franchise cricket. Their special tournament, NZ20 was scheduled to commence in January 2027. But it has been rescheduled to begin from December 2027, opening way for another Super Smash season.

Cricket fans will soon be getting a new franchise league, and this one will be based in New Zealand. The New Zealand Cricket had been working to launch the NZ20 as soon as possible. Their previous plans stated that the tournament had been scheduled to commence in January 2027, but those plans have now been affected.
As per the latest reports, the NZ20 inaugural edition has now been rescheduled to the December 2027 window. The NZC confirmed that they require some extra time to complete the required work for the competition. The statement said the NZC “has been working closely and constructively with all parties to progress discussions regarding the proposed awarding of a license and the establishment of the new league.”
Another reason why this has happened is due to the fact that it has tied with the international calendar. The statement also said that New Zealand cricket will be working on the Super Smash 2026-27 season, and hosting India and Sri Lanka men's team in the January 2027 window, where the NZ20 was previously scheduled.
Our Take
Cricket fans will have to wait a little more to ensure that they are able to witness the start of a new T20 league. Among all the full member nations of the ICC, New Zealand remained in the unwanted list of the nations who still don't have their own franchise league. With the tournament set to take place in the December 2027 window, we can still witness the Super Smash 2026-27 edition, which could also be the last.
