Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan got the better of Indian Super League side ATK 2-1 on Thursday as they took a giant step towards qualifying for the semi-finals of the 129th edition of the Durand Cup. For the green and maroon brigade saw in–form Joseba Beitia scoring one and assisting another.

Spanish midfielder Beitia has easily been Mohun Bagan’s best player in the revived Durand Cup so far, and he further extended his form on Thursday against another Kolkata giants ATK in their Group B match on their own backyard.

Bagan had approached the match at the back of a disappointing defeat against Peerless SC in their CFL Premier Division A opener three days back and not only did this win help them take another step towards the knockout stage, but also get the confidence back.

ATK had fielded a reserve side, like most other ISL sides, and although Komal Thatal did show some spark in the attacking third, Bagan’s first-half performance was the separator for the two sides. Kibu Vicuna's side was better in terms of possession and chances created although they fizzled out in the second half choosing to defend their lead.

ATK came close to scoring multiple times and with the hosts comfortable in their defensive third meant that they even reduced the deficit to one goal in 78th minute. However, Bagan came out the victor in the end.
