India expresses interest to host AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 2022

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has shown interest in hosting the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Asian Cup in 2022. India had earlier hosted the event back in 1980 in Kozhikode and is now getting ready for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to be held next year.

Three Asian countries have shown interest to host the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup and India is one of them. Apart from the AIFF, the football federations of Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan have also shown their eagerness to organise the most prestigious football event for women in the continent which will be held in next three year’s time.

“The All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the Chinese Taipei Football Association (CTFA) who hosted the tournament in 1979 and 2001 respectively as well as the Uzbekistan Football Association (UFA) submitted their interest to bid by the May 31, 2019 deadline,” the continent’s governing body said in a statement, reported PTI.

According to the PTI report, the three countries will be asked to send the details about the proposed venues for the tournament and the host will be announced by the second quarter of next year.

Top eight teams will participate in the 20th edition of the tournament which was started in the year 1975. The tournament is the stage from which the women national teams from the continent will seal their place for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

India had hosted the tournament before in the year 1980 in Kozhikode where they had finished as the second-best team in the competition. The Indian women were also the runners-up in 1983 had finished third in 1981. However, they had played the tournament for the last time in 2003.
