New Sevilla coach Julen Lopetegui was highly interested in bringing Real Madrid defender Nacho Fernandez to the club this summer. The duo have previously worked together and it is believed that the centre-back wishes to stay and play at Madrid, despite falling out of favour at the Bernabeu.

Spanish newspaper Marca has reported that Julen Lopetegui was quite eager to bring Nacho Fernandez to Sevilla during the transfer window. The representatives of both Sevilla and Real Madrid have had extended discussions regarding Nacho, but the talks fell out when the player revealed that he had no intention of leaving the Spanish capital.

Nacho was also offered a loan deal from Serie A giants Inter Milan this season, but the defender wished to stay and help Real Madrid, as the club looks forward to win trophies again after a disappointing campaign last season.  The centre back’s contract at Los Blancos is valid until July 2022, after he recently signed an extension at the club.

However, Nacho, who arrived at Real Madrid in 2001 as an 11-year-old, is well aware that he has fallen down manager Zinedine Zidane’s pecking order and is the fourth choice centre back at the club. Nacho’s refusal to accept other offers and his decision to stay will evidently see him get much less game time this season.
