When it became clear that Manchester United would miss out on Sporting CP’s Geovany Quenda, who joined Chelsea in a £42 million deal, United swiftly shifted their focus to Braga’s 19-year-old forward Roger Fernandes. The club sees Fernandes as a player with a similar profile to Quenda and is prepared to fight for his signature.
United has been keeping tabs on Fernandes, who made history in 2021 by becoming the youngest player to debut in the Portuguese Super Cup at just 15 years, eight months, and 12 days. His rapid development has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Brighton, Brentford, and Fulham. Chelsea also attempted to sign him in January but was unsuccessful.
Fernandes, whose contract with Braga runs until 2028, has a release clause of €40 million (£33 million). Reports indicate he is preparing for a move this summer, with Braga acknowledging that keeping him will be difficult due to mounting interest.
United’s summer transfer strategy, backed by INEOS, involves a significant squad overhaul, with players like Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Antony likely to depart. Fernandes could be a key addition to rejuvenate their attack under new manager Ruben Amorim.
