Manchester City have signed 25-year-old Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi for £20m on a five-and-a-half-year contract. With defensive injuries to Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias, City acted quickly as Guehi’s passing, ball-carrying and versatility fit their tactical needs. The England international arrives after 188 Palace appearances and follows City’s £62.5m move for Antoine Semenyo in January.

As the January window reaches its decisive phase, Manchester City have wrapped up a deal for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi for around 20 million pounds, signing the 25 year old England international on a five and a half year contract. Out of contract at Palace in the summer and previously chased by top European clubs including Liverpool, Guehi chose City after completing a medical and agreeing terms on Sunday.

His signing follows the arrival of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth for 62.5 million pounds earlier in the month, signalling long term squad planning rather than a short term response to injuries. City moved for Guehi after defensive issues were exposed in a 2-0 derby defeat at Manchester United, where three defenders aged 21 or under featured in the backline. With Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol and John Stones unavailable, leadership and experience were lacking.

Guehi offers both, alongside strong metrics since last season in clean sheets, duels won, aerial success, line breaking passes, interceptions and recoveries. Tactically he fits City’s flexible build up, able to operate in a back four or back three and comfortable carrying or switching play with either foot. With Stones and Nathan Ake frequently injured and edging into later career phases, the modest fee for an established Premier League captain appears an astute move that strengthens City now and for seasons to come.
