IPL 2016 | How RCB will win if rain washes out the IPL final

Rain threat looms large over the much-awaited IPL final between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad with thunder showers expected to hit the Garden City on Sunday evening. With a possible washout in the fray, what will happen to the IPL title in that scenario.

Bangalore received heavy showers on Saturday evening, and according to the weather department, a few spells of rain are likely to hit the city on Sunday by late afternoon or evening. Strong winds are also expected with the sky remaining partially cloudy. With the maiden IPL title of both teams on the line, the weather could become a big factor in deciding the eventual winner.

A. If the rain disrupts the proceedings on Sunday, a five overs per side match can be started as late as 12.26 am with a ten-minute interval between the innings and no timeouts. The closing time in that scenario will be 1.20 am.

B. In case of a washout, a reserve day is available for the final. According to the IPL rules, the match can be then played on Monday.

C. If at least one ball is bowled on Sunday and the match is not finished on the same day, then it will be completed on the reserve day. The match will resume where it was stopped on the original day. Three hours and 20 minutes, plus a further extra time of 2 hours are available for play on the reserve day.

For Eg: If the match starts on Sunday and it is disrupted after four overs, then the match restarts on Monday at 8pm with the remaining 16 overs of the first innings being played first. The second innings will be of 20 overs.

D. If at least five overs are completed by both teams on Sunday or on the reserve day, the result will be decided by the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern method.

E. If the match is disrupted after toss on Sunday, then a new match will be played on Monday with both teams free to select new teams.

F. In the case of a full wash out both on Sunday and the reserve day, a Super Over can be played between the teams on the reserve day with the cut-off time being 1.20am.

G. If no play is possible on Sunday and the reserve day including a Super Over, then the team that finished highest in the league table after the 56 matches of the regular season will be declared the winner. Royal Challengers Bangalore finished second in the IPL table ahead of Sunrisers Hyderabad, who finished third. In the case of two washouts, RCB will be declared as the winners of the IPL 2016 after finishing higher in the table.
