Bowlers were trying too hard in first session, admits Yamin Ahmadzai

Pace bowler Yamin Ahmadzai has stated that the Afghanistan bowlers were trying too hard during the first session that backfired as Indian openers thrashed them around the park. However, after the initial onslaught, Afghanistan came back stronger by the end of Day 1 by scalping 5 wickets.

Afghanistan were given reality check minutes into their historic maiden Test match with Indian batsmen firing all cylinders as Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay went to form a 168-run first wicket partnership. Both the openers reached their centuries with the flat pitch doing great help to them, rendering the Afghan bowlers clueless.

Fast bowler Yamin Ahmadzai, who ended Day 1 with wickets of Dhawan and KL Rahul, even admitted being stressful and their spinners trying too hard.

“Our bowlers especially Rashid was trying too much in the first session, but he bowled wicket-to-wicket on a pitch which began to grip in the last session. That is the reason why we came back strongly. Our bowlers picked five wickets," he said at the post-match conference.

Ahmadzai, who became first Afghan bowler to take a wicket in Test, stated that although they started their maiden match in whites under stress, the match was still a long way to go and the team was pumped up to prove their mettle.

"Well, this was a dream which has come true for our nation. It was enjoyable, but a little stressful. Nevertheless, playing against India, the number one team, was a good experience. Still there are four days to go and we will try to do our best," Ahmadzai said.

"Getting a Test cap is the most important thing in cricketers' lives. It is same for me as well. I cannot express it in words. There was excitement when we walked onto the field, but also were nervous," he added.
