Former Indian team S&C coach Shanker Basu has revealed that it was a training session by Dipika Pallikal that inspired Virat Kohli to take up a strong fitness regime. The current RCB trainer has also added that once Kohli is convinced about a certain thing, he would do everything to succeed.

While cricket was more about skill than fitness, Virat Kohli changed the perception with a solid regime of his own and being influenced by him, the entire Indian team transformed themselves. The man behind the change was Shanker Basu, widely endorsed by many cricketers and whom Virat Kohli calls the major influencer behind his transformation from a chubby boy to a super-fit athlete. However, Basu revealed that it was, in fact, India's squash champion Dipika Pallikal who was the reason behind Kohli's affinity towards a healthy lifestyle.

"The first two-three years, we used to train only in the summer during the IPL. Actually, he got inspired after seeing Dipika Pallikal (squash player) train. He was astonished to learn about the demands of an individual sport. That’s when he asked ‘why can’t I do the same?" Basu revealed, reported Sportstar.

“As Kohli knows, the sky is the limit in fitness. I always used to tell him that ‘Usain Bolt and Novak Djokovic should be your idols and you have a few more miles to go’”.

Kohli's transformation as an athlete also saw him grow as a person and a widely-admired leader of the men in the Indian set-up. That he has calmed himself and moved away from the time of taking instinctive decisions showed a facet of the character that was not always associated with Kohli. Basu revealed that Kohli's inquisitive nature helps him understand a thing clearly and then it is hard to stop him from achieving that.

“You have to build a relationship with the player first. You can’t jump the gun and force things on him. Virat would ask a hundred questions before getting convinced, but once he is, he would readily go to the ends of the earth. It’s difficult to get a student like him.”
