AIFF allows Indian men's team to participate in Asian Games, no update on women's team yet
The All India Football Federation has cleared the Indian football team to play in the upcoming Asian Games in Indonesia after head coach Stephen Constantine appealed to the government. There is still no confirmation from on whether the women’s team will participate in the continental tournament.
Sunil Chhetri & Co. did the nation proud after they beat Kenya in the finals of the recently concluded Intercontinental Cup to lift the trophy in Mumbai. Head coach Stephen Constantine congratulated the players and appealed to the Indian government to let the Indian team continue their preparations for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup by participating in the upcoming Asian Games.
“We need more games and if the government is listening, send us to the Asian Games. It’s an U-23 event and we have 11 players in this squad who are below 23. The benefits the players will gain from the Asian Games will be huge,” Constantine had said after the final.
The AIFF has come through on this request as they have given official confirmation to Constantine and staff that the men’s team will be allowed to play in the Asian Games. Meanwhile, there is still no concrete update on the situation regarding the women’s team as of yet with the AIFF still to make
“The official confirmation has come to the All India Football Federation. The men’s team is going for sure but the women’s team’s faith still hangs in balance as they are yet to get the green light,” a well-placed source close to the AIFF told PTI.
