We can't afford to be myopic in Indian football, says FC Goa co-owner Virat Kohli
Indian cricket icon and the co-owner of Indian Super League franchise FC Goa, Virat Kohli, admitted that he is happy with the youth and grassroots development but we cannot afford to be “myopic” in Indian football. The cricketer heaped praise on his team up ahead of the football season.
Virat Kohli was present at the unveiling of FC Goa’s new home jersey for the 2019-20 ISL season at the Bambolim Athletic Ground. During the event shared his views regarding the present youth structure of Indian football and feels there is still a long way to go even after “amazing” work done at the youth level.
“What is really amazing is the work that goes on beyond the first team. The youth structure is firmly in place and the club is looking to be trailblazers in youth development and grassroots. In terms of philosophy, style of play and success, I'm happy where we're at, but we can't afford to be myopic in Indian football. There's still a long way to go and we aim to be the face of change in Indian football," said Virat.
FC Goa missed out on a maiden ISL title last season after losing to Bengaluru FC by a solitary goal in the title clash. But they managed to clinch the Super Cup with a 2-1 win over Chennayin FC in Bhubaneshwar early this year. Virat Kohli lauded the efforts of the team in the past two seasons.
“The team is in great shape. They've been doing brilliantly the last two seasons with the Super Cup win it was just another validation of the process," added Kohli.
The new season is all set to kick-off on October 20 with FC Goa playing their first match at home against Chennaiyin FC on October 23.
