Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan does not expect Mohammad Amir, who is returning to England after the infamous 2010 spot-fixing scandal, to get a hostile reception during Pakistan’s upcoming series. The 63-year-old also said that he would have preferred Misbah-ul-Haq as captain in the World T20.

Six years after the infamous incident at the Lord’s, Mohammad Amir will travel back to the place where everything went wrong for him. Amir, then 18, along with then Pakistan captain Salman Butt, and pacer Mohammad Asif were found guilty of deliberately bowling no-balls in return for money in the 2010 Lord’s Test in August against England. Amir then received a custodial sentence, and a five-year suspension from the ICC. He made his return to International cricket back in January, this year, during Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand, and he has quickly become an integral part of the limited-overs squad.

Speaking about Pakistan’s tour of England, and Amir’s return after the 2010 spot-fixing scandal, Imran Khan quashed fears about the pacer receiving a hostile reception, and said that “there is a general wave of sympathy for Amir”.

"I don't think he will get a hostile press or reception because from what I have seen having been to England there is lot of sympathy for him because when the spot-fixing scandal took place he was just 18 or 19 and he later on also quickly admitted his guilt and apologised to everyone," Imran said in a talk show on Ary Channel, reported PTI.

"There is a general wave of sympathy for Amir and my experience says he will get positive press and response in England, and this should help him perform well in the coming series," Imran said.

So I don't think any ill-feeling or negativity from the players will have carried through. (But) the crowd might be a different story"

England pacer Stuart Broad had earlier welcomed the 24-year-old pacer back to Test cricket and had warned him about the hostile reception from the crowd, saying “the crowd might be a different story.”

"I don't think any feelings will be dragged into this Test match from that one.

"There are only four players in (this) England team from then, and Pakistan had a huge change-over.

"So I don't think any ill-feeling or negativity from the players will have carried through.

"(But) the crowd might be a different story," Broad was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

Imran Khan also said that he would have preferred Misbah-ul-Haq as the captain for the World T20 in March instead of Shahid Afridi.

"If I had been there I would have had Misbah-ul-Haq as captain in the recent World T20," he added, reported PTI.
