BCCI has confirmed in its Special General Meeting (SGM) on Monday that India will host the 2023 World Cup and the 2021 ICC Champions Trophy. This is the first time that India will host the World Cup alone after the previous three occasions saw them co-hosting with other Asian countries.

India have previously co-hosted the ODI World Cup in 1987, 1996 and 2011 and on all three occasions they had to share the venues with neighbouring nations. While they co-hosted the competition for the biggest prize in cricket with Pakistan in 1987, the duo were joined by Sri Lanka in 1996. In the 2011 tournament, that they won, India had to share the hosting rights with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

However, according to AP, the 2023 World Cup India will play the role of the host alone. India have won the tournament twice in 1983 and 2011 since the inception of the tournament in 1975 and will have a huge chance of repeating it when they host it on their home turf.

Apart from the two World Championships, India have also announced that they will host Afghanistan's first ever Test in 2019-2020 after the nation became a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in June 2017 along with Ireland. India had also allowed Afghanistan to host their "home" matches against Ireland earlier in March this year.

“Afghans were scheduled to play their first Test in 2019 versus Australia but considering the historic relationship between India and Afghanistan, we decided to host their first Test,” said BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary after the SGM.
