Former Indian stumper Kiran More has heaped praise on MS Dhoni’s sharp communication skills and quick connectivity with bowlers from behind the stumps stating him as the leader of the pack. He also thinks that the former skipper has been the perfect man for handling bowlers, mainly youngsters.

After a quick 39-run knock in the dying stages of the first innings of the Cuttack T20I that took India’s total to an intimidating 180, Dhoni was instrumental during India’s bowling as well where he was directly involved in four important wickets of Upul Tharanga, Kusal Perera, Asela Gunaratne, and Thisara Perera. Though Yuzvendra Chahal got the ‘Man of the Match’, the officials couldn’t really ignore his contributions and gave him the ‘Player of the Match’.

Dhoni’s brilliant communication skills with bowlers and its instant impact on the game are often caught in the stump mic leaving the viewers to remain in awe. The chirpy stumper doesn’t shy away from coaxing the bowlers when they don’t learn quickly from their mistakes, and the likes of Chahal, Ravindra Jadeja have found themselves on the receiving end of it.

“A wicketkeeper’s partnership with the bowlers is one of the most effective ones in cricket. You see Warne-Healy, Warne-Gilchrist. The wicketkeeper is often the leader of the pack as he knows what is happening on the pitch and can tell the bowlers and captain about things to do. Dhoni is very sharp and he connects quickly with the bowlers. You saw him taking that brilliant catch down the leg side,” former India stumper Kiran More told Hindustan Times.

“You see the keeper is like a captain. Dhoni is the best man to handle the bowlers, especially the youngsters. He speaks and you can hear him, it is so clear,” added More, stating that it is the wicketkeeper who often creates chances.

While Dhoni has been criticized by many for his degrading ability to finish off games, he has been as effective as ever behind the stumps. In the 9 T20I games this home season and the two away games in West Indies and Sri Lanka, Dhoni has been involved in 11 dismissals, which include five stumpings. His record in the ODIs gets better, where he has effected 39 dismissals that include 13 stumpings in 29 matches. So far, Dhoni leads the rankings for the most number of dismissals in T20Is with 74, making him the most successful keeper in the format.
