India vs Australia | Mitchell Marsh ruled out for the remainder of the series with shoulder injury
All-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who has been struggling with form recently, has been ruled out of the remainder of Australia’s tour of India with a shoulder injury. Both Marcus Stoinis and Hilton Cartwright are in contention to replace the 25-year-old in the Australian squad ahead of the third Test.
"Mitch Marsh will go back to Melbourne with his shoulder. We'll decide in the next day or so the replacement there, and then work out what our best XI is from there.
"He had the injury through the summer, he was fine when he got here but it just got worse. I was really happy with the way he played the second innings in Pune. It's unlucky for Mitch and we move to whoever the next person comes in. Whether we go with Usman Khawaja or Glenn Maxwell or whoever is selected, we'll wait and see," coach Darren Lehmann said, reported ESPNcricinfo.
Marsh, who has made 21 Test appearances for Australia since making his Test debut against Pakistan in 2014, has been struggling to perform consistently over the past few months. His bowling pace has dropped from the 140s to 120s, while he has also struggled to score runs with the bat.
"Mitchell has been playing with a shoulder injury for most of the summer, which we have been managing up until now, but unfortunately it has progressively deteriorated to a point where he is unable to function at the level required. Consequently, he will return to Australia to consult with specialists to advise the best course of action,” Australia’s team physio David Beakley confirmed.
Marcus Stoinis and Zimbabwe-born all-rounder Hilton Cartwright are both in contention to replace Marsh in the Australian squad ahead of the third Test in Ranchi, which is scheduled to start on March 16.
