Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes fined for breaching ICC code of conduct
Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes have been fined 15% of their match fees for breaching the ICC’s code of conduct in the Test against Sri Lanka today. In another episode, Mushfiqur Rahim was criticized, by some media outlets, for allegedly stopping R Sandakan from checking on an injured Bangladesh player.
Both Tamim and Imrul were found guilty of having breached Article 2.1.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel that essentially refers to “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game.”
While Tamim showed his bat to the umpire to indicate that he had hit the ball, during an lbw appeal, Imrul, on the other hand, pointed to his thigh pad to indicate where the ball had hit him, while Sri Lanka
After the match, both players admitted to their offense and accepted the charges sanctioned by Andy Pycroft, representing the Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees.
The charge was laid by on-field umpires Aleem Dar and Sundaram Ravi, third umpire Marais Erasmus, and fourth umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge. All Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of a warning/reprimand and/or the imposition of a fine of up to 50% of the applicable match fee.
In addition to the sanction imposed, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of both players, according to article 7.3 of the new code (effective from September 22nd, 2016).
However, as of now, both players have been given one demerit point each. And according to article 7.6, if Tamim or Imrul reach four or more Demerit Points within a twenty-four month period, their Demerit Points will be converted into at least two Suspension Points and will, in turn, equate to a ban from their next match or matches.
Two suspension points equal a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player.
