Dean Jones : Indian cricketers are getting millions, they should keep playing every series
Dean Jones has suggested that the Indian cricketers should not crib about the cramped schedule as they are earning a huge amount of money because of the same. Jones has also added that he has high hopes on India's pace-attack to do well in the pacer-friendly conditions of South Africa.
The packed scheduling has frustrated Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who had stated that it was easy to criticise players for non-performance overseas, but insufficient time for players to get accustomed to the conditions was often ignored. The statement led to MS Dhoni coming out in support of his skipper as well, but now, Dean Jones, known for his athleticism and fitness in his heyday, stated that the “cramped schedule” statement is unnecessary as Indian players are earning a lot of money be because of the same reason.
"If these guys are getting paid millions of dollars a year and if they are going to get millions of dollars then they have to keep playing (every) series so they can recoup their money through television and sponsorships. So they need to keep playing," Jones told NDTV.
"I can't really speak on behalf of Virat and MS (Dhoni). When in form and you are playing well, the season is not long enough. You just want to keep playing. If you are making runs and winning easily you just want to keep playing. When you are struggling and the team is being smashed, like Sri Lanka at the moment, the season can't end quick enough," he added.
India’s pace-bowling stock has risen drastically in the recent past with as many as six players fit enough to take on any team, on any type of conditions in the Test format. Jones was quick to acknowledge their abilities and added that the current lot could even win the series in South Africa.
"Bowling is India's key and they have got really good pace attack. I love Shami, I love he goes about his bowling. Ashwin too will lead the spin attack. All in all, I won't be surprised if they try to do it (win the Test series)," he concluded.
