JKCA consider withdrawal from Ranji Trophy amidst financial turmoil
Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association is considering pulling out of the Ranji Trophy as the ongoing monetary turmoil has left the state with no money to pay for their players’ allowance. Despite numerous notifications to BCCI concerning this, the board has allegedly turned a deaf ear to their crisis.
For the past few years, the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) has been living amongst controversies with allegations thrown at them for financial misappropriation. Consequently, the judicial authorities have frozen their accounts with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) not disbursing the state’s annual share to JKCA since March 2012.
“It is not easy to run cricket. There is an investigation taking place on misappropriation of funds here. The association needs at least around 6-7 crore annually to run cricket in the state. I want to have a Ranji Trophy camp now but I can’t as I don’t have the money to pay daily allowance to my players,” said JKCA secretary Iqbal Shah.
JKCA has approximately Rs. 34 crores in its reserves waiting to be utilized and they had even approached BCCI in July this year, requesting them to issue a letter to the J&K Bank so that the state association can regularize the frozen accounts. However, there has been no response since.
Shah said, “I was told that the matter will be taken up by the Committee of Administrators (CoA). I went and met them in Delhi. They said it will go back to the office-bearer. Now these office-bearers have been given a notice by the Hon’ble Supreme Court. The other day, I was told that the decision on my state association can only be taken by the general body.”
The conditions under which Jammu & Kashmir players are playing aren’t very suitable. The state cricket association had two groups fighting for authority that consequently led the state team to play all its matches away from home. However, even their participation seems questionable now.
“The next hearing in the Supreme Court is on September 19. So where is the general body now? Chances are that the BCCI AGM will only take place next month. And from next month, the domestic championship is starting,” pointed out Shah.
Shah has also emphasized that the JKCA has agreed to implement the Lodha Committee reforms, after the Supreme Court ordered that only states adhering to those reforms will be given annual grants from BCCI. However, no progress has made since last year.
