IPL 2018 | The choice of deliveries can improve when it comes to our bowling, says MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni praised the Mumbai bowlers for the way they bowled and stated that CSK bowlers could have bowled better deliveries. Not putting all the burden of defeat on the bowlers, he has also added that they were 15-20 runs short from the target and would have liked the team to score around 190.

Chennai Super Kings were handed a nasty eight-wicket loss by Mumbai Indians, who finally seemed to get back into the rhythm at the MCA stadium in Pune on Saturday. Thanks to the two big wickets of Dwayne Bravo and Dhoni in the 18th over of the match, Mumbai Indians were able to restrict Chennai to a below par total of 169. Though Raina starred for the hosts in the first innings with an unbeaten 75 off 47 balls, Rohit Sharma's knock of 56 off 33 balls helped Mumbai get to the target with two balls to spare.

CSK head coach, Stephen Fleming, however, felt that McGlenaghan’s 18th over was the turning point of the match in which he took the wickets of Dhoni and Bravo, resulting in CSK falling 15-20 runs short of the target. He stated that 190 would have been a good score for them and appreciated Mumbai bowlers for keeping CSK down to 169.

“It was a bit of a struggle, but we were in a prime position. Mitch McClenaghan’s over, where he got away with getting MS with a rogue one; he might claim it was a great plan and it quite possibly could have been,” laughed Fleming. “But that’s the turning point in the game. We were expecting to launch. MS, obviously, has been great form in final overs. So, the score of 190 was a real possibility. For them to bowl well and drag it back to 170 was good cricket from them.”

Dhoni felt that their bowlers didn’t quite bowl up to the expectations and appreciated Mumbai bowlers for executing their plans well.

“The wicket had a bit of pace in it. If you bowl back of the length, it was coming on to you very quickly. It didn’t have much bounce means you had to very careful with length and line. But if you have pace then you can push the batsman on the back foot, and playing the cross-batted shot was not easy,” Dhoni said at the post-match ceremony. “I feel that’s what they really did. Even for spinners, mixing up that line and length was crucial. Their spinners did that pretty well compared to our spinners. The choice of deliveries can improve when it comes to our bowling, but overall we would have liked to put around 15-20 runs more.”

With Mumbai needing 22 of the last 2 overs, the game could have gone either way. However, Shardul Thakur proved to be an easy target for Rohit Sharma, who hit him for four fours, which pretty much concluded the game. Fleming seemed to show faith in Shardul Thakur, who has not been quite consistent in the death overs for CSK and insisted that Thakur is still a work in progress and backed him to perform well.

“Shardul has been inconsistent in the death overs. We have worked very hard in getting his planning more than anything, the fields where to bowl. We have worked very hard on that. It’s still a work in progress,” said Fleming. “You have got to appreciate that most teams are struggling in the death because the hitting is so good. So, looking to find a way to shut people down…There has been no better evidence of that than in our last few games where we have been batting.  It’s a tough skill and it is getting harder. He has made some good games, but there is still a bit of inconsistency there.

“We show faith in players. Just chucking players in and out doesn’t solve the problem. It has been one of our methods. Developing a player and giving him a chance is very important and Shardul has been on that path. We will assess again and ensure that numbers stack up or else we will make to look a change.”
