Former Windies captain Alvin Kallicharan has heaped praise on Virat Kohli comparing his ‘ruthless attitude’ to that of West Indian great Sir Viv Richards. Richards captained the West Indies in 50 Test matches from 1984 to 1991 and is the only Windies captain to never have lost a Test series.

Another sizzling display by Kohli in the third ODI where he scored an unbeaten 160 to become the Indian skipper with the most ODI tons as he overtook Sourav Ganguly(11) with his twelfth ton. The skipper has been in terrific form of late as he scored two tons in the first three ODI’s guiding his side to the verge of registering a historic series win as they lead the six-match series by a score of 3-0.

Kallicharan pointed out that Kohli’s ruthless attitude was similar to that of West Indian legend Sir Viv Richards when he was the captain of the all-conquering Windies side.

“The attitude is strong in both. I am one person who wouldn’t like to compare players. But Kohli’s attitude is as ruthless as Viv’s was,” Kallicharan said in an interview to TOI.

Richards, who led West Indies in 50 Test matches between the time period of 1984 and 1991, is the only West Indies captain to have never lost a single series throughout his tenure as captain. Aside from the fact that he is considered as one of the greatest batsmen of his generation, Richards was also known for the aggression he displayed during his time as skipper and how it reflected on his teammates.

“Kohli seems to have some of those qualities. He is a successful captain. As a batsman, he is a phenomenon. Always hungry. His consistency is tremendous,” said Kallicharan

Virat Kohli took over the reins of the Indian team from MS Dhoni initially as Test captain and was later handed the responsibility in all three formats in 2017 when Dhoni stepped down voluntarily from the post. Kohli had led India to a record-equalling nine consecutive series wins before the South African series which the visitors lost by a margin of 2-1.

“Kohli now has brought a new brand of captaincy (He’s) somebody who says ‘I will play with five batsmen or five bowlers’ and sticks to that. Virat Kohli is not an orthodox.” Kallicharan added.

If India manage to pull off a win in the ODI series, they will become the only second nation after Australia to win a series of five or more matches in the 'Rainbow Nation'.
