The Britons undoubtedly find football more entertaining than cricket as a recent poll showed, but it seems that their cricketers are growing fond of it as well. The 2nd ODI between Australia and England saw a brilliant moment when Chris Woakes showcased his footballing skills to dismiss Alex Carey.

After going down in the five-match Ashes series by 4-0, the Three Lions have made a strong comeback in the limited-overs format. They have already won the first ODI by five wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match ODI series. The Kangaroos started the second ODI on a stronger note standing on Aaron Finch’s blistering 106, before England unlocked a late flurry of dismissals.

The incident happened during the 48th over of the game when Australia batsmen looked like mere passengers. Alex Carey was sent back to pavilion following Chris Woakes’ stunning run-out. Australia were 255/6, losing Mitchell Marsh, Aaron Finch and Marcus Stoinis in the last 46 runs with the dugout hoping for a late resurgence to push the score near the 300 mark.

Woakes’ slower ball bouncer to Cameron White was dealt poorly by the veteran cricketer as he mistimed his shot with the ball getting the under-edges of his bat and hitting back down the pitch. The Aussies had to keep rotating the strike as they couldn’t afford to waste any ball and Carey, quite expectantly, ran towards the striker’s end.

Woakes was on the verge of ending his run-up and as soon as he saw the ball dropping in front of him, he smartly kicked it on to the wickets. Closer replays showed that if he had bent down to pick it up, Carey would have easily reached the crease. With Carey returning to the pavilion for 27 runs, the Aussies had no other batsman left and they crumbled in the next 15 runs, posting a paltry target of 270.
