Shreyas Iyer has claimed that the responsibility of leading the team in the Deodhar Trophy has helped him in improving his game as stated that it has made him more mature in taking decision while batting. Iyer has also categorically said that he deserves to be a part of the Indian cricket team.

Under Iyer’s captaincy, India B won their first match against India A in the Deodhar Trophy in Dharamsala. After facing a loss in the second match against Karnataka, India B managed to reach in the final where the team will face Karnataka on March 8. The 23-year-old, who scored 28* and 33 in the two games, said that the extra burden captaincy motivates him to do better.

“It gets the best out of me. Because I always want to win. Even while batting, it never gets to my mind that I’m the captain, so I’ve to change my game. It has made me more mature in taking decisions and going for my shots. Earlier, I used to play pre-determined strokes, but now I’ve controlled that habit. I’m aware of the situation and the conditions," Iyer told Ahmedabad Mirror.

"Captaincy takes your mindset to a different level, and I’m enjoying it. I wasn’t happy with the way I got out, because I was going really well, and wasn’t panicking, and suddenly I played this shot. I thought it would be a good shot, and the ball must’ve gone into the gap, but unfortunately, it went straight to the fielder (at deep midwicket). I’m getting starts, I just need to pass through the 30s and 40s, and I’m sure the big one is nearby.”

The Indian batsman received his ODI debut cap in Dharamsala against Sri Lanka in December 2017 where he managed only nine runs while facing 27 balls on the bouncy and swinging track. He failed to utilise his first appearance in the playing XI but over the next two games, he scored 88 and 65 runs respectively. Till now, he has featured in six ODI games for India scoring 210 runs at an average of 42.00 including two half-centuries which included his three matches in the South Africa ODI series. He would definitely like to give match-winning performance in the Deodhar final so that he can utilise it to cement his place in the Indian middle order.

“I should get a long run. I have done that much performance so obviously, I deserve it. I need to maintain my consistency to be in the Indian team. And also I have not got that many chances to play in the Indian team. I hardly got two chances (in South Africa), and that too, after 40 overs (he came in during the 36th and 32nd overs),” he said.

In the recent past, the Indian players have made their name for themselves due to their extremely high fitness levels which was clearly visible on the field during the South Africa tour. The trend was started by Virat Kohli but now almost all Indian players following the routine and focussing on their fitness. Iyer, who played 46 first-class games scoring 3989 at an average of 53.90, believes that to maintain the momentum on the international circuit, the most important thing is a positive mindset.

“It is just your mindset. Everything else is similar. You have to be really strong mentally. And also the physical aspect is very important as the training keeps you consistent. The Indian team right now is focussing more on training. That really helps in the long run. The other thing to maintain at that level is the mindset. That is the key to achieve success at that level. Obviously (you have to think positively). But there might be negative thoughts as well if you are not performing well. How you handle it, how you cope with it is totally up to you,” he added.
