Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has revealed that he has tried to reproduce the good, bad and ugly moments of his career in his book - A Century Is Not Enough. He also stated that the book is not exactly an autobiography but more of a handbook for youngsters who want to do well at the top level.

Sourav Ganguly is undoubtedly one of the best captains India have ever produced. He took over the reins after one of the darkest phases in Indian cricket - the match-fixing saga in 2000. He led the team exceptionally well and made them believe that they could achieve big things and beat anyone in world cricket.

Sourav Ganguly in his book, A Century Is Not Enough, has written about the kind of player he was and how he led the team during those tough times. In an interview with The Hindu, the former Indian captain revealed that he has tried to reproduce the "good, bad and ugly moments" of his career in this book. He also revealed that the book was not exactly an autobiography but more of a handbook for young cricketers and professionals who want to do well at the top level.

“Yes, of course it did. It triggered the good, bad and ugly, and I have tried to reproduce that in my book,” Ganguly said to The Hindu, when asked about what moments of his life (and career) his book contains.

“Chiki (Sarkar, of Juggernaut Books) wanted me to do an autobiography but I was not keen on one right now. This is more of a handbook for young cricketers and professionals who want to do well at the top level; know what it means to be successful. That is why it is called A Century Is Not Enough,” Ganguly further added.

The present CAB president further explained that this book does not contain every tour he played or every series he played, but it was about different situations like the World Cup final, Test debut, how to react when you are dropped and so on.

“The book is not about tours per se... it’s about different situations — situations as the captain, playing the World Cup finals, making your debut in Tests, how you feel, and what it is about someone doing well at the top level, how you react when you get left out, what should be the mindset when there is pressure, because at this level, there is pressure on everyone at various stages, whether you are successful or not,” the 45-year old CAC member revealed.

Ganguly also spoke about the highs and lows of his career since a player is bound to have ups and downs if you play for a long time. Hence, one needs to find a way to handle everything. He revealed that when you are down and out, the battle is never over if you believe you can keep moving.

“I think that happens in every professional career when you do something for a long period of time. You have your ups and downs, you will have highs and that’s why you survive for a long time. It is all about how you feel when others feel you are not good enough. You just have to find a way to succeed, find a way to handle everything. The battle is never over if you believe you can keep moving. As much as you learn to handle failure, you must learn to handle success too, because that’s also important,” Ganguly added.

The 45-year-old, who does commentary on occasions, revealed that the game is still very close to his heart and hence, he follows it. He wants to keep track of each player and how they are performing. He also said that this Indian team will always fancy its chances anywhere in the world.

“I don’t commentate all the time now but I do follow the team because at the end of the day, this game is very close to my heart, and I follow it, keep track of it. I want to see how they are doing, the better ones — what Virat Kohli is doing, what Shikhar Dhawan is doing — what the young boys are doing because this is very special to all of us. And as I have said often before, this Indian team will always fancy its chances anywhere in the world,” Ganguly said.

When asked about the administration side of his life, the CAB President revealed that playing in the middle was more fun but felt that administration plays a huge role in the success of anything. He also labelled himself as the player’s administrator.

“I think the perspective is different. Obviously, playing in the middle was more fun because that’s what I did all my life. But administration plays a huge role in the success of anything. Administrators guide players and I have played for such a long time, I understand how it feels as a player. You can say I am a player’s administrator,” he added.

He also said that he was unsure of where BCCI is heading. He feels that it all depends on the Supreme Court.

“We don’t know, to be honest, where it’s heading. It depends on the Supreme Court and what finally happens with it (the Lodha Committee reforms). We will just have to wait,” Ganguly further stated.
