Indian team are top side in limited overs, says Sourav Ganguly
Despite having agreed to the fact that India couldn't do well in England, former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly feels that they are one of the top sides when it comes to One Day Internationals. India start their Asia Cup campaign against Hong Kong on Monday, followed by the clash against Pakistan.
Despite coming into the tournament at the back of a disappointing series in England and in the absence of Virat Kohli, India still remain one of the favorites to win the Asia Cup, according to former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly. He also seemed confident about Rohit Sharma leading the side in Kohli's absence.
“India could not do that well in England but in limited overs they are a top side. Team is much stronger with Virat but Rohit has a very good record as captain so I expect him to do well too. They are capable of winning (the Asia Cup),” Ganguly told PTI.
Players like Kedar Jadhav, Manish Pandey, and Ambati Rayudu have all been made a part of the Indian squad participating in Asia Cup. This would be that time again when MS Dhoni's performance could come under the radar as he will be taking the pitch for the first time since his criticism following his slow innings in the ODI series against England.
In the Asia Cup, Indian have been a success, winning six of them out of the total 13 matches that have been played, including that one time, when the tournament was played in a T20 format, back in 2016. They first won it in 1984, when the Asia Cup was played for the first time. After that in they repeated the feat in 1988, 1990-91, 1995, 2010 and 2016.
India would be playing the first match against Hong Kong on September 18 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, followed by a face-off with Pakistan on September 19 at the same venue.
