Rajasthan Royals’ latest sensation in the Indian Premier League, Riyan Parag, has stated that his interest in cricket came from his father Parag Das. The former cricketer had made his First Class debut in the 1993/94 season for Assam and went on to play 75 matches in domestic cricket until 2008.

Riyan Parag had made his debut for Assam as a 15-year-old teenager. He was even a part of the 2018 U19 World Cup winning team and had scalped three wickets in three innings. Post some consistent all-round performances for his domestic side, the 17-year-old was picked up for his base price of 20 lakhs rupees by Rajasthan Royals at the 2019 Indian Premier League auctions. The youngster felt that his father was the reason behind his interest in the sport.

“I watched my dad do drills at home and play on the field. That’s where the interest in cricket came from. I held a plastic bat in my hand when I was barely 16 months. I have pictures of that,” Riyan said, reported The Hindu.

Parag made his IPL debut against Chennai Super Kings on April 11 and was impressive with the ball as he only gave away 24 runs in three overs while scoring 16 runs. However, he announced his arrival with a mature knock of 43 in just 29 balls while chasing against the famed bowling line-up that Mumbai Indians possess. He followed that up by scoring 47 in 31 deliveries against Kolkata Knight Riders in another run chase. He felt that he has learned to absorb pressure by playing alongside big names in the Royals’ dressing room.

“Playing alongside legends like Ajinkya Rahane, Steve Smith and Ben Stokes teaches you how to play under pressure. I didn’t know how to play under pressure until I came to the IPL,” he expressed.

Assam is not among the strongest team on the domestic circuit but Parag reckons that his consistent performances will get him noticed.

“If someone from Mumbai scores a double hundred, he will be noticed immediately. He will get the limelight instantly, while someone from Assam will probably have to score twice or thrice to get that attention,” the all-rounder asserted.

“But that’s the challenge we love. I have been told before I even started playing domestic circuit that I have to perform big and on a consistent basis. If you do that for two-three seasons consistently, no one who can stop you."
