It’s pretty exciting that the cupboard is full of fast bowlers, exclaims Mitchell Starc
Mitchell Starc has expressed his satisfaction about the current bowling scenario in Australia as the Ashes squad has five world-class pace bowlers, all of whom are battling for spots in the first eleven. He further discussed his relationship with the other bowlers and the upcoming match at Lord’s.
Mitchell Starc knows what it is like to get dropped after he spent his initial years in international cricket as a fringe player, constantly in and out of the squad. However, ever since he established his place firmly in the Test lineup in 2015, he has served as the strike bowler of the Kangaroos and has been pretty much irreplaceable. The trio he forms along with Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins has fast earned a reputation of international cricket’s most deadly bowling combination, earning the team victories on numerous occasions.
However, even with 211 wickets in 51 Tests to his name, not to mention the exemplary World Cup which he ended as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, he was not named in the playing eleven in the opening Ashes encounter at Edgbaston. However, the same does not worry him as he voiced his happiness seeing his fellow bowlers return after struggling from injuries.
“Everyone prefers to play but it’s pretty exciting that the cupboard is full of fast bowlers. It’s awesome to see Jimmy Pattinson back after what he’s been through, and similarly Pat Cummins previously,” Starc was reported saying by The Guardian.
With the pace attack spending loads of time together across the three formats, Starc revealed they have developed a great camaraderie and have only one aim - to make Australia win.
“We’re really close mates. So having that competition there whether it be Josh and I playing or a different two playing, it is a squad mentality. We’re here to win the Ashes. We’re not here to make it on the park. We want to win this Ashes. Whether that’s a different bowling attack each game, or the same through five Tests, it’s exciting,” Starc added.
The Kangaroos fared excellently in the first match at Edgbaston, winning by a mammoth 251 runs. It was spinner Nathan Lyon who stole the show, but the fast bowlers put in a decent shift too. Pattinson ended with seven wickets, while Peter Siddle and Cummins had a couple scalps each to their name. However, Starc playing or not will largely depend on the conditions at offer considering the team’s approach to maintain as good a team balance as possible.
“I don’t know if you’ve been talking to JL or not,” Starc laughed. “The boys did really well at Edgbaston. If called up at Lord’s I’m ready to go as well. We’re not sure what the conditions are going to be like but, if it’s anything like that Irish Test, it’s perfect for us bowlers,” he concluded.
