Ramnaresh Sarwan has called the Windies team to play as a unit against India in order to hold a chance to win their first series in 17 years. The former West Indies middle-order batsman has also added that if the team can execute 70-80 percent of the game plan, they can spring a surprise.

In one of the most one-sided encounters of the 21st century, the Windies have failed to win a single Test series against India in 17 years and have gone a 21-match winless streak against the current No.1-ranked Test team in the world. The statistics do have enough weight to call India an outright favourite to win the series once again.

In an ideal scenario, counting the hosts off ahead of the series would be a foolish thing any team can do - England, who suffered a 2-1 loss in early 2019, can attest to that. Ramnaresh Sarwan also echoed the same sentiments and stated that if the team can collectively play well, they have a chance of beating India.

“If we can collectively play well, we have a chance of beating India. We have individual talents, but it is a matter of playing well as a unit. Hopefully, we will be able to play as a team. At the end of the day, once we gel as a unit, we have a chance of winning,” Sarwan said.

After the Windies have opted for Dukes ball in early 2018, the wicket has started becoming faster and conducive to pacers. However, the pitch getting slower as the game progresses has never been taken out of the equation which made it difficult for the batsmen to play their shots. Sarwan feels the home team needs to make best use of the conditions on offer.

“Yeah, ideally you would want a fast wicket in Antigua. We have to ensure we play well on whatever wicket we play on. Obviously, the guys would have plans and if they are able to execute 70-80 per cent of the time, we would have a good chance of winning,” he said.
