Glenn Maxwell shared that after being ruined both mentally and physically, he was forced to take a sabbatical in order to nurse his mental health while revealing that his girlfriend was the first notice it. Maxwell has made a comeback to cricket and will be leading the Melbourne Stars in the BBL.

Having sparked a revolution in the world of cricket as he left the Sri Lanka series halfway to nurse his mental health, Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is all set to return from his sabbatical. Maxwell will be leading the Melbourne Stars in their season opener against the Brisbane Heat later this month.

Maxwell shared that his rigorous schedule over the years took a toll on his mental health as he felt ruined both physically and mentally as the reason for the sabbatical he took from the sport.

“I was pretty cooked when I decided to take the time off. Big reason why I did take that time away is I was pretty mentally and physically ruined,” Maxwell was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

“I think it was eight months on the road, living out of a suitcase and that probably had been going on for four or five years, just constantly on the road and it all just caught up with me at that time,” he said.

The hard-hitting batter also informed that it was his girlfriend who was the first to notice his deteriorating condition and urged him to consult an expert.

“My girlfriend was probably No. 1, it wasn’t an easy job for her to deal with me going through my mood swings for the first few weeks, but Michael Lloyd was the guy I had the initial conversation with, he’s been someone who I’ve confided in since back in the academy days, so I’ve known him for well over a decade now,” Maxwell said.

Maxwell was grateful of Cricket Australia as well as the other teams he is a part of for giving him the space to recover and continue his services. The all-rounder assured that having learnt a lesson he will be watchful about managing his commitments as a player in the future.

“I did put a bit of pressure on myself to try and play as much as I could this year and, rightly or wrongly, I didn’t come out of it the way I thought I was going to. I’ll have a look at that next year,” Maxwell added.
