Former Mumbai coach Chandrakant Pandit has stated that MCA VP Vinod Deshpande must be held responsible for the recent debacle of the Mumbai team in the Ranji Trophy. Recently, Mumbai was ousted from the tournament after they went on to suffer an innings defeat to Vidarbha in a must-win game.

Chandrakant Pandit had a successful tenure as Mumbai coach, guiding the team to the Ranji Trophy title in 2015-16 and 2016-17, before taking over as the Vidarbha coach. He went on to spearhead Vidarbha's championship run in the following season and made himself one of the most sought-after coaches of the Ranji history. However, seeing the recent slump in the form of the strong domestic team, Pandit has stated that only one person is responsible for the debacle of the Mumbai side.

“One cannot only blame the players [for this debacle]. One Mumbai administrator is to be blamed for all this disruption – Vinod Deshpande,” said Chandrakant Pandit to Mid-day.

“He is responsible for the mess in the Mumbai team along with those who supported him,” Pandit told the newspaper.

Pandit continued and added that it was Deshpande who worked to remove him as the coach of the Mumbai team. Mumbai is a strong team in the domestic circuit winning the title as many as 41 times.

“The team was functioning smoothly when Dilip Vengsarkar was the Cricket Improvement Committee’s chief and Milind Rege was chief selector a couple of years ago. He ensured I am removed as the coach under the pretext that players were not happy with me and that I was too strict,” the former India player told the newspaper.

Deshpande meanwhile refuted the claims and defended himself saying that it was only natural to get someone else for the job as Pandit had to stay away for almost ten months.

“Pandit would be away with the Mumbai team for nearly 10 months due to the neutral venues system,” he was quoted as saying.

“And since he was also the director of the MCA indoor academy at the Bandra-Kurla complex, we wanted to ensure that functioning at BKC shouldn’t be affected due to his absence.”
