ICC World Cup 2019 | Security review to take place in World Cup venues after intruder suffers injury
Organizers of the World Cup are likely to conduct reviews on the host grounds after lax security has led to incidents of pitch intrusion, followed by inadequate measures to prevent them in the future. An ICC spokesperson revealed the news to the media following England’s match against Afghanistan.
A grave security breach took place in the match between England and Afghanistan on Tuesday after an Afghanistan supporter managed to evade the security responsible for cordoning off the playing area. He ran onto the middle of the pitch in the 24th over and proceeded to knock the bails off both sets of wickets before officials caught hold of him, though only after he had already managed to escape from the field.
However, instead of being expelled from the ground, spectators claim the apparently intoxicated fan was kept in the holding area by a public bar, which led to an even more serious incident due to lack of strict measures. A group of fans who had been sitting close to him, supposedly motivated by it, ran onto the pitch at the end of the game and one of them on being stopped by the stewards fell abruptly and suffered a fracture in his arm. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and proper treatment was given.
"A spectator, who was involved in a pitch invasion at the England vs Afghanistan match, slipped awkwardly and suffered a suspected fracture of his arm. The individual discharged himself from medical care at Old Trafford before transportation to a local hospital was arranged,” an ICC official said, reported Cricbuzz.
Pitch invasion is a serious crime in the United Kingdom and previous cases of it, mostly in football matches, have seen spectators charged with heavy fines and in some cases, even lifetime bans from entering the grounds. Announcements are thus made before the beginning of every game to remind spectators of the consequences of committing such an act. However, the main concern in this scenario is not enough was done to prevent the incident from taking place in the first case which has led to calling for a review of the security for future matches.
"CWC 19 and the venues take the security of everyone involved in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup very seriously and we work closely together to ensure the highest safety standards are adhered to regarding spectators. CWC19 is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances of this accident with the venue,” the spokesperson added.
