VIDEO | Mahmudullah survives caught behind appeal as 'ghost spike' confuses third umpire

How often have you seen a third umpire getting confused while making a decision technology available to assist him? During the first Test match between Bangladesh and New Zealand, the third umpire was left confused as Mahmudullah survived a caught-behind appeal in spite of a spike on RTS.

Bangladesh batsmen had a tough outing in the first game of the series against the Black Caps as they were bowled out for a mere 234 in the first innings. Even the bowlers didn’t enjoy their outing and the home side took a huge first innings lead of 481 runs. Coming out to bat for the second time in the Test match, the Bangla batsmen had a tough task ahead of them and their start was terrible again. At one stage, they were 126/4 when they lost Tamim Iqbal, who was set at the crease with 74 runs, to Tim Southee.

The wicket of Iqbal had brought Mahmudullah to the crease and the Bangladeshi skipper was asked a tough question straightway by Southee. The first ball for him pitched outside the off stump but he still went to poke at it. The ball went into the gloves of BJ Watling standing behind the stumps. All the Kiwi players including the bowler and the keeper were pretty confident of another wicket as there was noise while the ball went past the bat but the appeal had no impact on the umpire Paul Reiffel. He remained unmoved and the confident Kiwi players decided to go upstairs as Kane Williamson made a “T” signalling a review.

However, the HotSpot didn't show anything on the under edge of the bat but the RTS had something else to show. There was a spike on the snicko meter but it was one frame after the ball had passed the bat. TV umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge took some time checking the RTS again and again and then went in favour of the on-field decision as there was no evidence to rule Mahamudullah out. The bat was well away from the batsman’s body but it was only the technology which confused the third umpire and he went with the on-field decision.
