RCB batting consultant Vikram Solanki is of the opinion that the pitch used for the opening encounter of the ongoing IPL was not an ideal one after they were bowled out for a mere 70 in the first innings. The former English batsman also said that RCB needed to be brave batting first against CSK.

It was certainly not the kind of start the Royal Challengers Bangalore would have wanted going into the 12th edition of the IPL as the star-studded batting line-up crumbled against the Chennai spinners. The Virat Kohli-led side was bowled out for just 70 runs in the first game after they were asked to bat first on a tricky wicket which had a lot of turn but lacked pace on it.

RCB’s batting consultant said after the game that the team was surprised with the way the pitch behaved at the M Chidambaram Stadium on the opening evening of the 2019 IPL.

“I don't think we played well enough and CSK was by far the better side. We were surprised by spin and lack of pace and it spun far more than we thought. It was probably not an ideal pitch as it was not an even contest. You need an opportunity to score as well,” Solanki was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

RCB kept on losing wickets at regular intervals in yesterday’s game which affected their final score which was not enough to trouble the home team. There was not a single partnership in the entire RCB innings which could have propelled them to a respectable total at the end of the innings yesterday. Solanki opined after the game that something around 120-130 would have been par on  yesterday’s pitch.

“Perhaps 120-130 would have been enough, but batting first in the first game in the tournament we needed to be brave and say maybe should have looked to get to 100 and look at things. We needed just one partnership and if necessary could have even played ugly and dug in to stop the rut of constant wickets,” the former English cricketer said.
