Former England opener Marcus Trescothick has agreed on a two-year contract to join the Somerset's backroom staff as a full-time assistant coach in retirement. Trescothick had amassed more than 19,000 runs across 296 appearances for the county since making his debut for them in 1993.

Aged 43, Trescothick called time on his 27-year playing career earlier this summer after scoring 19,654 first-class runs for the county. The left-hander also made over 200 appearances across all formats for England, scoring 26 centuries at the international level.

"I'm absolutely over the moon to have the opportunity to join the coaching setup here at the club and I can't wait to get my teeth into it. I spent some time in and around the 2nd XI last season, so I've already spent some quality time with the younger players who have just come into the squad. To think that you might be able to help progress someone's career is a great feeling and it's something that I'm really looking forward to," Trescothick said, reported The Cricketer.

"We have a great coaching setup and I've obviously had the opportunity to tap into the expertise of the current coaches. I also did some work with England last year and hopefully I can use some of that knowledge to help benefit the club over the next few years," he added.

After playing his final 1st XI game against Surrey at Guildford in June, he joined the national team setup as a batting consultant to support batting coach Graham Thorpe ahead of this summer's Ashes series. Somerset head coach Jason Kerr revealed that, in his new role, Trescothick's primary focus be on developing the county's younger players as they progress through the 2nd XI system.

"To be able to add someone like Marcus, with all of his experience, to the support staff is really exciting for us. What is great for us is that his coaching journey is in its infancy and he's really hungry to learn. Any decision like this is made with the best interests of the club in mind. We are excited to be aiding his coaching development and we will certainly be tapping into his knowledge to help support our young players," Kerr said.
