24-year-old-Kerala batsman Sanju Samson smashed an unbeaten 212 of 129 balls against Goa in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match on Saturday. Incidentally, this was also Samson's first ever List A hundred and with this, he became just the sixth Indian to have scored a double century in a one-day game.

Sanju Samson scored his maiden List A century and managed to convert it into a double ton on Saturday against Goa. This was incidentally Samson's maiden century in List A cricket and also the fastest double ton by an Indian (of just 125 balls!). It is also the highest individual score in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, surpassing the previous 202 by KV Kaushal. He is only the third Indian outside international cricket to score a List A double century. uns with fellow batsman Sachin baby, who himself scored a century.

Having shattered so many records, he propelled Kerala to a mammoth score of 377 from their 50 overs, having strung together a partnership of 338. In a brutal display of power-hitting, Samson struck 21 fours and 10 sixes en route his maiden double-ton, thwarting each and every Goa bowler out of the park.

It's an unbelievable coincidence that Samson's performances have come at a time when India are in need of a proper wicket-keeper batsman after Rishabh Pant failed to capitalize on his chances in the recent ODI and T20 matches. Pant burst onto the scene with Test centuries in England and Australia, but failed to capitalize on the opportunities that were given to him during the ODIs and also while batting at number four in the World Cup. He has often been heavily criticized for his rash shot selection and despite having assurance from the team management to play his natural game, he has failed to deliver the goods.

After grabbing the limelight in 2013 IPL, a then 19-year-old Sanju Samson had shown a lot of promise. He was tipped to be the undisputed successor of MS Dhoni, but his journey since has been a topsy-turvey one. Having given consistent performances of late and now having improved his fitness, Samson has made a strong case for himself for being India's first-choice wicket-keeper.

With Saha now the preferred choice in whites and Sanju Samson impressing one and all with his temperament and technique, it will be interesting to see whether Rishabh Pant will be backed to start in the playing eleven again in any of the three formats.
