IND vs SA | We should make the first punch as India are favourites, says Vernon Philander
South Africa fast bowler Vernon Philander believes that the South Africa team needs its senior players to step up in the upcoming Test series in India. Even though India would be favourites, Philander believes that throwing the 'first punch' would give the visitors an edge in the contest.
Bowling all-rounder Philander has referred to the Indian team as the "big dogs" in the upcoming three-match Test series, which starts on October 2. With the opening Test against India, South Africa will begin their campaign in the ICC World Test Championship and Philander acknowledges that India being the hosts makes the battle tough. With Hashim Amla and Dale Steynâs retirements coming at this unfortunate time, South Africa will have to adapt massively.
"It's a tough start playing India in India but I don't think the South Africans would have wanted it any other way, take the big dogs in their home ground," he was quoted as saying by the ICC.
The 34-year-old pacer has said that there will be too many challenges coming up for South Africa and there will be many key player battles to look forward to as well, especially when it comes to the big names. However, he hopes for the team to start well.Â
"All of us are looking forward to this challenge and there are a lot of player-to-player challenges as well. Spotlight will be on a lot of big players to make a statement. Our job is to come here and give the first punch as India is obviously expected to do well," said Philander after the conclusion of the final day of the practice game.
"We are known as a team who starts slow so this time around we have to start well. There is a lot of pressure on players (but then) it's international cricket and you want to keep it that way."
Philander concluded by saying that he feels heâs in good touch and is confident about himself ahead of the challenge.Â
"We are obviously prepared to do well. When we do well, it gives you that better confidence and I'll take that confidence with me. It's been a long winter for me and I am feeling in really good nick."
