MI vs CSK | Twitter reacts as Ishan Kishan earns stunned Shreyas Gopal a wicket with his spidey senses

Empty appeals have been a tradition as long as cricket itself, even though they have lost some meaning in the age of DRS. Mumbai Indians seemed to be indulging themselves in another such appeal on Sunday until Ishan Kishan's insistence and Hardik Pandya's backing earned the team a surprise scalp.

Mumbai Indians managed to keep the Chennai Super Kings relatively quiet in the early stages of their encounter at the Wankhede by scalping Ajinkya Rahane in just the second over. However, Rachin Ravindra and Ruturaj Gaikwad seemed ready to cash in after the powerplay with the Kiwi announcing his intention by muscling Shreyas Gopal for a mammoth six on the fourth ball of the eighth over. However, before the opener could showcase his explosive best, Ishan Kishan came to the hosts' rescue with a DRS appeal for the ages.

Gopal responded to Rachin's gargantuan hit by firing a quicker delivery wide of the stumps. The Black Cap shaped for a fierce cut but the ball fizzed past his willow and into Ishan's gloves. A muffled appeal followed but the umpire quickly shut it down and Gopal seemed to concur with the official. However, Ishan signalled he had heard something and pushed skipper Hardik Pandya to go upstairs who obliged despite being evidently sceptical of the claim. While the TV umpire analysed the delivery, Gopal had already begun to prepare for the next delivery, echoing the sentiments of Mumbai's huddle that seemed ready to disperse as soon as the umpire signalled not-out. Yet, much to everyone's disbelief, the ultra edge showed a slight spike when the Kookaburra passed the bat, eliciting exuberant celebrations from the Blue Army. Shreyas rushed over to Kishan to embrace him with his mouth wide agape, much like the rest of the team, while the wicket-keeper had a huge grin plastered on his face.

Twitterati was quick to come out in praise of the conviction showed by Ishan that earned the team the crucial wicket of Rachin.
